Ruta do Viño Monterrei > D.O. Monterrei

D.O. Monterrei

Monterrei Wine RouteIt is Spain’s smallest D.O. With a size of 450ha, it takes up just four councils. Located in the south east of the province of Ourense and very close to the border with Portugal. Being also very close to the Rias Baixas highway, gateway to Galicia, makes this place an outstanding one in terms of accessibility.

This D.O. comprises of Monterrei, Oímbra, Verín and Castrelo do Val councils, with two well defined different sub-zones:

Monterrei valley zone.

Monterrei hillside zone.

The D.O. is growing from year to year, so that both the wine producers and manufacturers-bottlers are also increasing. At the moment the D.O.’s production is about 1,5 millions kgs of grape. White Godello grapes, Treixadura and Dona Branca’s variety make up to the 65% of the harvest.

The other 35% is red wine from Mencía, Bastardo and Arauxa’s (Tempranillo) varieties.

The white wines are light aromatic, golden yellow or straw coloured, , with a medium alcoholic strength close to 11 degree. They are also full, tasty, acid balanced and have an acceptable aftertaste. The red wines are characterized by their purple colour, pleasant fruit aroma, are light with the right alcohol-acid balance, with a less alcoholic strength than the white wines and a touch of youthfulness which makes them appealing to the consumer.
